Mad at Craig's List Fraud

Argh!!!

Let me say that in the past I've had a great experience listing things for sale on Craig's List.  My husband and my sister, not quite as Pollyanna as I appear to be, were both nervous and skeptical about posting things on Craig's list and having someone come to your house.

My husband  - "You hear about fraud all the time over the internet.  It just makes the whole internet dirty".
Me "Hey buddy, I make my living off the internet.  Be careful."

My sister (who is much more of a sensationalist)  - "Hey, people are using Craig's list as a way to get your home address, kill the men and kidnap the children and women."
Me - "Yeh, I think they could do that by going to any to any house, but, they are coming to pick up the furniture at  2pm.  I will call you when they leave.  You call the police if you don't hear from me by nightfall".

So we post some new items and lo and behold ...Fraud!  Luckily my husband and sister made me suspicious enough to question a strange email. Here is the first email

So, I ignored the not so good English.  I don't care who buys my entertainment unit and if they speak English perfectly or are trying to learn English.  However, it just seemed strange that anyone would send me a check without having the merchandise in exchange.  Now, who would be the Pollyanna?  Why are they demanding that I remove the item immediately?   So I replied that I prefer to use Paypal and to let me know if that was okay.  I never heard from them again. 

The next day I get email number two - Fraud

Again, they are going to send me the money without being there to receive the merchandise AND they are going to pay me extra to go pick it up at Western Union.  I just need to remove the listing immediately and give them my home address.

So what I don't understand is how this scam works?  They don't have any personal financial information such as my credit card, social, bank account, etc.  What purpose does having my home address serve?  Oh wait, I know...they are going to come and kill my husband and kidnap me and my kids.  My sister was right!

The "certified check" fraud can work two ways:
1) They send you a fake certified check drawn off a smaller, but real, bank;
2) you hand over the merchandise immediately, they get the stuff,
3) you get stuck with a fake check that will indeed deposit, but bounces -- about TWO WEEKS LATER.

The more ambitious schemes work like so:
1) I have a certified check from the sale of another big item for, say $5,000, but can't deposit it and send you the correct amount for your stuff because--insert bogus reason here.
2) I mail you the certified check, you deposit the check, it appears to "clear," as your bank takes the certified check to be real.
3) You send the merchandise and the "change" in the form of a money order or Western Union.
4) Two weeks later, the check is revealed as a fraud

You are out of your stuff AND a few thousand dollars to boot.

This is a very old Internet scam. Mostly originates out of Nigeria, home of the Internet fraud.

As someone who makes a living from the Internet, you really *should* be more educated about how it can be misused.

I just had two similar offers on a Jeep I am selling on Craigslist. I accepted both of them, and am awaiting the "checks". Of course, I did NOT remove the listing as the requested. Once they ask me to wire the remainder of the money back to them, I'm going to get really apologetic and tell them I already lost all the money at a casino, but if they sent another check, I would THEN wire them the money. I want to see if they will continue to send me bogus checks, if nothing else, just to put them out on postage fees.

I had a similar experience when trying to sell my motorcycle on craigs list. I was contacted by a "buyer" who said he would send over a courier with a certified check and pick up the bike. He didn't even want to see it or start it up first.

I did a little research and learned this was a common scam. I replied to the "buyer" with text from one of the links describing the scam and explained that I am being very cautious because I know other people have had problems before. I asked him how he could guarantee that the check would clear and said I preferred cash. I never heard from him again and sold the bike for cash a couple of days later.

I am in contact with this son of a bitch right now. He is trying to do the same thing with me. I'm trying to get as much personal information out of him as I can but since he isn't actually going to scam me I can do nothing with the information. However, you have the ability to file a report and press charges against the guy assuming I can figure out a way to find out who he is. Thanks for this post! I received the first email from a 'pediatric surgeon' that did not have time to meet with me. It sounded suspicious, but I was unsure (always trust your instincts!). I knew it was a scam when I emailed a second person back that the item was not available and recieved almost the same email response from him that the first guy sent. Awesome!

I have just gotten the same type of email four times while trying to sell a lladro figurine. I was suspicious but sent an email back asking for more information. The last one gave me a phone number but said that he is deaf and the number would go straight to his email.. Same story, different day. My housemate and I are trying to sell an Early American repro cobbler's bench on Craigslist, asking $100. Guy (email [email protected]) says he wants it and will be courier-ing a certified check. My housemate checks Craigslist's scam pages, senses trouble, and asks him if there's a less complicated way, suggesting Paypal. We don't hear from him for a few days, then Friday we get an email that says the check will come on Monday. Housemate tries to email him to tell him we won't do it this way, and her email bounces. It came FedEx this morning -- for $2500.56, with a note inside to contact "[email protected]" for further instructions. The check really does look legit, no wonder people fall for it. It's from Firstar Bank in Cedar Rapids, IA, and the company name in the left corner is ACT, Inc., P.O. Box 168, Iowa City, IA 52243. The return address on the Fedex slip is Bob Rathbun, 88004 Clark - Logistics Ln, Ft. Hood, Texas 76544. I ran the tracking number and it originated in Sun Valley, California. I'm trying to figure out the best place to report it to.

I have a guy (Portal Allison)trying to scam me saying he is from the Woodstock Pharmacy in the UK (supposedly)trying to rent a guest house from me that was listed on Craigslist. I havent given him any info yet, was hoping to try and CATCH the !#@$!# somehow. I only get one email a day from him, must be going to internet cafe's or something using different IP addresses? Thank you all for posting the responses you have received. I am using Craigslist for the first time to sell an aquarium and dining set. I almost believed some of the responses I got but after reading all your comments I am now coming to the conclusion that not a single response I have received is legitimate. This is the most recent one, I almost believed it. It is sometimes tough to sort out the scams from the legit.

As you see they all have similar styles... They don't even mention the name of the item such as chair, computer, carpet etc...They want to buy something they have never seen. They all have movers so they won't pick the item personally. They all want to pay it with a money order or a check... When I got the first one I was very happy to find someone that easy going (I am very naive...). Then I received the second one and I started to get suspicious, I immediately began google searching the CL scams. Then I found this web site and saw the similar e-mails people received. When I was reading the stories I received the third scam mail! Unbelievable! I had great experience using CL before... I always thought it was one of the best invention ever...I am very dissapointed right now.
Since there will always be bad people in the world, we need to think twice if something sounds too good to be true...

We just ran into the same scam on Craigslist. We received several replies all about the same. These even have people/bots monitoring the emails to send responses or follow-up on the listings. Too bad there is no safe place to be a part of a community anymore. One thing to take away - any time you see an offer that is too good to be true *especially on-line*, it most likely is!

We got a check today from Napa Steel Company, we called the company and they said that they have been getting dozens of calls a day about this scam. Banks have also been calling them. We recieved this email from:

Thanks for posting this! It confirmed my suspicions about the exact same email I got word for word for a bike I have up for sale. The best part is, if you google Terry Cole and Baltimore, you get a valid former Baltimore NFL player,... now why would HE want my Stearns & Foster??

Unfortunately, in my haste whilst on a break from conducting a presentation, I responded with my name, address and phone number (SMACKING MY HEAD HARD) and once the email was in progress, I googled and the email address did not return any hits but of course the name did. The email below was in response to one I had sent about photos so it wasn't completed automated. The first email actually checked if the item was still available. So I wasn't as suspicious as I should have been and yes, I was distracted and didn't stop to think. So now I am sure I won't hear back as I have asked for an address and phone number so I can verify this person is real as I have given my info and removed the ad and wanting a 'proof of life'. So what's to bet I get nothing back???

Now I gotta watch every suspicious dood that comes by my house and calls my cellphone (company sponsored) and of course, any other suspicious activity with my already fraud alert protected personal information. I am such an idiot!

I contacted the internet complaint too. I have contacted just about every branch that I could think of to take care of this. I am anger and hurt that anyone would or could do this but no matter how mad I am I have a husband that is way more po than I could ever be. I just got the same exact emails from Daniel Watkins who's email address was [email protected] which obviously doesn't even match up. Its would almost be commical aside from the fact that not everyone found this thread and many have and will continue to be ripped off by this scam.

How is it that some sort of gov't agency can't bust these folks by seeing one of these scams through and tracking the money transfers?

I got the same type of message about a wedding dress I was selling on craigslist from a guy who now calls himself Gordon Maxwell with an email address of [email protected] and look out for his "shipping agent payment department" Penny Atterton [email protected]. after receiving a tracking number from Gordon, I followed it on UPS. It was intercepeted and re-routed to another address on the day it was supposed to arrive. I let Gordon know I didn't receive the check and it was re-routed to another address. I advised him since I did not receive the money I was relisting the dress. I did not hear anything back from him but the fake cashier's check from Citizens Bank came 6 days later than he claimed it would and was for $1,200 over the selling price of the actual dress. I had been very suspicious and googled - cost courier service pick up wedding dress - to see if I could find out how much a courier service would actually cost to pick up a wedding dress and found this website. Thank you all for sharing your stories as well. What a life saver it has been! Also, thinking why on earth would someone pay more for a courier than the actual dress costs. Besides, someone could have bought the dress brand new right from a bridal shop for less than this person was paying for the dress and the courier. What a scam. Seller Beware! Sell only to locals on craigslist.

The Marine reference is what really ticked me off, so that's the biggest reason why I replied how I did, which I'm posting for everyone's enjoyment. ;) (This idea I got from another site regarding Craigslist scammers.)
